Sponsorship FAQS |
What does the student receive through sponsorship? Most importantly, the student will learn about the Good News of Jesus Christ and have love and encouragement through the community of the local church. In addition, these items may be provided based on the grade of the student: Bible, Christian Education classes, school fees, pair of shoes, backpack, school books and school supplies, emergency food supplies if needed for the family, emergency health care fund and basket of food at Christmas. Why do you sponsor adults? There are many young adults who have had to quit school for a variety of reasons-- need to work to help their families or they want to get married or had no money to continue their education. These young adults, once they make the decision to go back to school to further their education, are very committed to their field of study. Some may want to be a teacher, electrician, a nurse or any number of other career studies and we feel it is very important to help these young adults to become proficient in their chosen field so they may support their families and enjoy life beyond subsistence living. Can I send a gift to the student I sponsor? If you wish to give the student a gift for Christmas or their birthday it is preferable to send an extra check to our office at least 2 months before the date and state what you would like purchased. The gift will be purchased in Guatemala and given to the student. Our offices can give you suggestions for appropriate gifts for the age of the student. Due to a variety of reasons it is better not to send gifts directly to the student. The high cost of shipping to Guatemala; thefts occuring with shipments and postal mail; delivery is uncertain; customs and import taxes are expensive-- are these all reasons we feel it is best not to send gifts. Please do not send gifts to our office for the student. |
How can I correspond with the student I sponsor? You can send letters and greeting cards to our offices for your student. Please be sure to include the student name and ID number. Be sure to allow plenty of lead time before you want your student to receive the letter so that the letter can be translated and hand carried to the church for the student. You may write as often as you would like to and include photos or whatever will fit in the envelope. What should I avoid writing about to my student? Please avoid writing about your material possessions or including photos showing wealth. Please do not give your address nor suggest your student visit you in your country. Please don't ask if they need or want anything from you. What do I receive from the program about my sponsored student? You will receive a yearly progress report on your student of how they are progressing in school and in church, a photo and 2-3 letters throughout the year written from your student. How are the students selected and accepted into the program? The church does a home study on each student needing sponsorship and makes a determination based on a set of criteria determined in conjunction with Education And More. Some of the criteria is based on the following: low family income and assets; malnutrition in family or student; student unable to afford to attend school; parents are likely to remain committed to the education of the student; parents are committed to the church and the Christian faith and both boys and girls will be selected. Can I visit my sponsored student? You are welcome to join an educational mission trip to Guatemala to see our work in action and visit your sponsored student at the same time. |
